Preparing to Prosper: Making Progress Through Faith

Are you feeling stuck between where you are and where God has called you to be? Many believers find themselves settled in a comfortable place, somewhere between their promise and their blessing. This year is about preparation – what we do now will have a dramatic effect on the next five to seven years of our lives.

What Does It Mean to Prepare to Prosper?

The word “prosper” in the Bible means success in multiple areas of life. But this success doesn’t happen by accident. While God’s favor is essential, prosperity requires intentional preparation and action on our part.

There are two types of people hearing this message: those who listen casually and walk away with a few good thoughts, and those who are truly leaning in – taking notes not just from what’s being said, but from what God is speaking directly to them. Which type are you?

The Vision from Isaiah 54: Making Room for God’s Blessing

In Isaiah 54:1-3, God speaks to Israel using the picture of a barren woman who must enlarge her tent in preparation for the children she will receive. This woman represents anyone who has hopes and dreams but finds themselves in a desolate situation where nothing seems to be working.

God tells her to “enlarge the place of your tent” and “let them stretch forth the curtains of your habitation.” Notice the word “them” – God has other people to help her, but she must let them challenge her comfort zone and help her think differently.

The message is clear: make room for what God wants to do. Most of us spend our time trying to make something happen instead of making room for God to make it happen.

Abraham’s Journey: A Model for Progress

Abraham, the father of faith, provides the perfect example of how to make progress toward God’s promises. In Genesis 12, God calls Abraham to leave his comfortable life and journey to an unknown land, promising to make him a great nation and bless all families through him.

The Pattern of Progress

Abraham’s journey reveals a crucial pattern: he traveled “by stages” toward his destination. Faith doesn’t happen in leaps – it happens in steps. Each stage of his journey included:

  • Moving forward despite uncertainty
  • Building an altar to worship God
  • Taking time for a “praise pause” to acknowledge progress
  • Continuing to the next stage

Why You Need a Plan

Progress requires closing the gap between where you are and where you’re going. This starts with making a plan based on what you already know right now. Don’t wait for perfect clarity about the future – work with what God has already revealed.

Remember: note takers don’t change the world, action takers do. When you hear from God, you have two responses: “So what?” or “Let’s go!” Choose to be a “let’s go” person.

Acting in Faith Despite What You See

After making a plan, you must act in faith despite what you see. This is challenging because your plan will often look insufficient compared to the size of God’s promise. That’s exactly why faith is required.

Three Truths About Your Faith Journey

Every Future Has a Fear

Whatever God is calling you to will require courage. You cannot play it safe and obey God at the same time. Fear causes many people to stop just short of their breakthrough, even after accomplishing great things.

Every Future Has Uncertainty

Faith is not certainty – it’s trust in God’s faithfulness and ability. Abraham risked everything he had built because he believed that God “is and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).

Every Future Has Opposition

You must be prepared to fight for your future. When Abraham arrived in the promised land, he found it inhabited by violent, wicked people. Yet he wasn’t ashamed to worship his God in the middle of his enemies. Many times your blessing is behind a battle line.

Strengthening Your Foundation

To make real progress, you must strengthen four key areas of your life right now:

Your Footing

Examine how you’re using your time and energy. Busyness will keep you from God’s best. You cannot inhabit the future God has for you if you’re constantly distracted by television, phones, or scattered priorities.

Your Faith

What are you studying in God’s Word? Who are you fellowshipping with about faith? Your faith needs consistent feeding and exercise to grow stronger.

Your Finances

Anything significant requires financial preparation. If you don’t have a budget, you’re not taking your finances seriously. A budget tells your money where to go instead of letting your money tell you where you can go.

Your Faithfulness

What commitments have you made to God, your family, and others? Stop making excuses and start keeping your word. Faithfulness in small things prepares you for greater responsibilities.

The Power of Praise Pauses

Like Abraham, you need to take regular “praise pauses” in your journey. Build altars – special places and times where you meet with God. Use one hand to thank God for where you’ve come from and the other to reach forward, acknowledging you need Him for where you’re going.

If you don’t pause to see the progress you’ve made, you won’t have hope for where you’re going. Point out your progress and celebrate every time the new person in you shows up.

Life Application

This week, conduct an honest assessment of your four foundation areas: footing, faith, finances, and faithfulness. Choose one specific area that needs strengthening and create a concrete plan to address it. Remember, God orders the steps of the righteous – as long as you’re progressing, God is progressing with you.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Where am I currently “settled” between my promise and my blessing?
  • What fear is keeping me from taking the next step of faith?
  • How am I currently using my time, energy, and resources – do they align with God’s calling?
  • What specific action can I take this week to make progress toward God’s promise for my life?

Don’t spend all your time thinking about your future dreams while expecting them to happen accidentally. Back up, look at where you are right now, and take intentional steps to progress toward where God is calling you. Your future depends on the preparation you make today.
