From First to Freedom: Understanding the Power of First Things First

Life often feels chaotic and overwhelming, like a pile of scattered shoes with no clear starting point. We struggle with knowing where to begin and which choices to make. But what if the secret to freedom and order in your life isn’t found in what you accomplish at the end, but in what you choose to do first?

What Does It Mean to Put First Things First?

The principle of “first things first” isn’t just a catchy phrase—it’s a foundational spiritual truth rooted in God’s Word. In ancient Israel, God established a celebration called First Fruits to teach His people this vital lesson about order and priority.

During First Fruits, the Israelites would take the very first portion of their harvest and bring it to God before they kept anything for themselves. This wasn’t just about giving; it was about acknowledging who was truly in control of their lives and their provision.

The Biblical Foundation of First Fruits

In Deuteronomy 26:1-4, 10-11, God instructed His people: “When you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you as a special possession, and you have conquered it and settled there, put some of the first produce of each crop you harvest into a basket and bring it to a designated place of worship… and now, O Lord, I have brought you the first portion of the harvest you have given me from the ground.”

This wasn’t a burden—it was a celebration that included feasting, dancing, and community joy. It was a time to remember, reorder, and rejoice.

Why Can’t You Serve Two Masters?

Jesus taught a crucial principle in Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters. For you will either hate the one and love the other; you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”

The problem with having two leaders in your life is that it creates confusion and division. When you don’t know what should come first, you struggle with both starting and making decisions. But when you establish a clear order—when you decide what will be first—everything else can fall into place.

What Leads Your Life Controls Your Life

Whatever you allow to lead your life will ultimately control your life. If worry leads, it will control everything that follows. If prayer leads, it will shape your entire day. If money concerns come first, they’ll dominate your thoughts and decisions.

The key is choosing what gets the first position in your thoughts, actions, and priorities each day.

How Does First Fruits Apply to Modern Life?

You might wonder what ancient harvest celebrations have to do with your modern life. The principles are timeless and practical:

1. Acknowledging God as Your Source

First Fruits teaches us to recognize that God is our source, supplier, and sustainer. When you honor God with your first and best—whether it’s your time, money, or attention—you’re acknowledging that everything you have comes from Him.

As Proverbs 3:9-10 says: “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.”

2. Trusting God for What’s Coming

When the Israelites gave their first fruits, they were trusting God to provide for the rest of their needs. This required faith—believing in what they couldn’t yet see.

Hebrews 11:1 reminds us: “Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.” Faith always goes first, not last.

3. Understanding That the First Represents the Whole

What you do with the first portion sets the standard for everything else. Your first dollar determines how you’ll handle your wealth. Your first hour shapes your entire day. Your first response in a relationship influences the whole dynamic.

What Does Freedom Really Look Like?

Most people think freedom comes at the end—when they have enough money, when they get the right job, when circumstances change. But biblical freedom happens at the beginning, not the end.

Freedom comes from the disciplines and choices you make with your first dollar, your first hour, your first response. It’s not about the size of what you have; it’s about the order in which you use it.

Three Key Principles for Freedom

  • What’s first in your life will form the rest of your life – Your daily first choices shape everything that follows
  • Do with the first what you want to do with the rest – Manage your first $10 the way you want to manage $10,000
  • It’s not about size, it’s about order – God cares more about your priorities than your quantities

How Can You Practice First Things First?

The season of First Fruits offers a practical way to reorder your life. From now through Pentecost, you can participate in this ancient rhythm by doing three simple things each day:

Daily First Fruits Practice

  1. Remember – Recall at least one thing God has done in your life
  2. Reorder – Identify one thing that’s gotten out of order and work to fix it
  3. Rejoice – Find something to be joyful and grateful for

These three actions mirror the original First Fruits celebration and help keep your life aligned with God’s priorities.

Life Application

This week, commit to practicing “first things first” in one specific area of your life. Whether it’s starting your day with prayer instead of checking your phone, giving your first portion of income to God, or leading with love instead of defensiveness in your relationships, choose one area where you’ll let God be first.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is currently leading and controlling my life?
  • In what area do I need to reestablish God as my source?
  • What would change if I consistently put God first in my daily choices?
  • How can I practice remembering, reordering, and rejoicing each day?

Remember, freedom doesn’t come from having more—it comes from ordering what you have according to God’s design. When you put first things first, everything else has the opportunity to fall into its proper place.
