Embracing Your Authentic Self: Living as God’s Masterpiece
Have you ever wondered if your life has meaning? Have you questioned whether you were made for something special? These questions aren’t unique to you—they’re part of the universal human experience. We all search for purpose and significance, wondering if our lives truly matter.
The good news is that you were created with intention. You are no accident, but rather a masterpiece crafted by God for a specific purpose. Let’s explore four liberating truths that can connect you to a meaningful life and help you embrace your authentic self.
What Does It Mean to Be Authentically You?
Being authentically you means embracing who God created you to be—with all your unique characteristics, talents, and even quirks. It means understanding that you have a specific purpose that only you can fulfill.
Psalm 139:13-16 tells us: “You made all of the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex. Your workmanship is marvelous. How well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion… You saw me before I was born, and every day of my life was recorded in your book.”
This passage reveals that God didn’t just create your physical body—He crafted your inner being, your personality, your interests, and your unique energy style. He designed you with intention and purpose.
Are You an Accident or Part of a Divine Plan?
There are three kinds of plans for your life:
- God’s plan for you
- The world’s plan for you
- Your own plan for you
While the world’s plan and your own plan might sometimes work against God’s original design, His plan for you is not for your “awfulness” but for your “awesomeness.” You were created to manifest the awe of God in the world in your unique way.
Just as the famous sculpture “The Thinker” was pulled from a larger work called “The Gates of Hell” to become its own masterpiece, God has pulled you out of His grand story to be your own unique masterpiece with your own journey and purpose.
What Are the Four Liberating Truths About Your Authentic Design?
Truth 1: You Are No Accident
Colossians 1:16 tells us: “For through him, God created everything in the heavenly realms and in the earth. He made the things that you can see and the things that you cannot see… Everything was created through him and for Him.”
You aren’t a cosmic accident—you’re a cosmic awe. You weren’t evolved to survive; you were made to thrive. Every part of your design has intention. Consider these amazing facts:
- Every drop of your blood has 250 million cells
- Your blood flows at a rate equivalent to circling the world 6,720 times in a day
- Your brain has 10 billion nerve cells processing 36,000 bits of seen information every hour
You were created to inspire awe—that “wow” moment when something so incredible catches our attention that it makes us feel small yet connected to something greater than ourselves.
Truth 2: You Are Divinely Crafted
Proverbs 16:4 says, “The Lord has made everything for his own purposes.” This means if you find out what you’re made of, you’ll find out what you’re made for.
Consider the story of Amy Carmichael, who struggled with having dark eyes and hair when all the Irish girls around her had blue eyes and auburn hair. Later, when she became a missionary in India, she realized her physical features were perfectly designed for her mission of rescuing girls from slavery, as she could blend in more easily than those with typical Irish features.
There’s nothing wrong with you—there are just some things wrong for you. God has divinely crafted you with specific characteristics to fulfill His purpose for your life.
Truth 3: You Are Purposefully Assigned
Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us: “I know the plans I have for you. They are plans for good and not disaster. They’re plans to give you a future and your hope.”
Psalm 138:8 adds: “The Lord will work out his plans for my life.”
You were prepared for what you were planned for. Your birth was a sign that this world needed who you are at this specific time and place. Your calling isn’t something you manufacture through your own efforts—it’s something you discover as you walk out your journey with God.
What you might see as peculiarities or problems are actually preparations for your unique assignment. These aren’t flaws—they’re features designed to help you fulfill your purpose.
Truth 4: You Are Design Fitted
Romans 12:6 says: “In God’s grace, God has given us all different gifts for doing certain things well.”
1 Peter 4:10 adds: “God has given each of you a gift from his variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.”
You have what you need to be who you are. God has equipped you with specific gifts and abilities to fulfill your purpose, whether that’s to serve a need, solve a problem, soothe a pain, stir a passion, sound a message, satisfy a want, or shine God’s light.
How Can I Live Authentically as God’s Masterpiece?
Stop trying to be well-rounded. Instead:
- Find your peculiarity—embrace what makes you unique
- Find your people—connect with those who appreciate your authentic self
- Find your power—discover your “superpower” or unique gift
- Find your peace—accept and lean into who God made you to be
Remember that what you do is not who you are. Your design should show up in what you do, not the other way around. Don’t look to your job or worldly identities to define you—instead, discover who God made you to be and live that out in everything you do.
Life Application
This week, I challenge you to stop trying to be well-rounded and instead embrace being authentically you. Take some time to reflect on these questions:
- What unique characteristics, talents, or even “peculiarities” has God given you that might be preparing you for your purpose?
- How might you be trying to “fit in” when God actually designed you to “stand out” in some way?
- What gifts has God given you “for doing certain things well”? How might you use these gifts to serve others this week?
- In what areas of your life are you seeking your identity from what you do rather than who God made you to be?
Remember, you are no accident. You are divinely crafted, purposefully assigned, and design fitted by a God who created you as His masterpiece. Embrace your authentic self and live out the awe-inspiring purpose He has for you.
