Three Truths That Prove You Matter to God: Insights from Psalm 139
One of the deepest human desires is to know that we matter. In a world where people are constantly trying to prove their worth through various means, God wants us to understand that we truly matter to Him. This truth is beautifully illustrated in Psalm 139, where David engages in what could be described as a divine duet with God.
Why Do We Need to Know We Matter?
Most people would say they feel like they matter when they are seen, heard, and not alone—when somebody truly knows them. These fundamental human needs are precisely what God addresses in Psalm 139, revealing three profound truths about how we matter to Him.
Truth 1: You Are Known by God
“You know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up, you know my thoughts, even when I’m far away.” (Psalm 139:1-2)
God knows us completely—spirit, soul, and body:
- He knows our heart (our spirit)
- He knows our thoughts (our soul)
- He knows our actions (our body)
While people may know us partially, God knows us fully and intimately. This knowledge isn’t superficial; it’s comprehensive. He knows things about us that we don’t even know about ourselves.
What Does It Mean to Be Known by God?
Being known by God means you were:
- Pre-approved in His planning
- Accepted in His divine design
- Formed based on what He already knew about you
Just as buyers need pre-approval letters in real estate transactions, God has already given you a “pre-approval letter” for your life. You don’t need to wait for the approval of others—you already have God’s approval.
Truth 2: You Are Seen and Heard by God
“You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.” (Psalm 139:3)
In a world where many feel invisible and unheard, God assures us that He both sees and hears us:
- “You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion” (v.15)
- “You saw me before I was born” (v.16)
God doesn’t just observe us from a distance—He watches over us. Unlike other gods that need to be “awakened” to hear prayers, our God’s ear is already turned toward us. The connection is already established. Even before we speak, even at the beginning of a thought, He already knows, sees, and hears us.
Does God See Me When I Feel Invisible?
Even when you feel unseen by others, God sees not just what you do but who you are. He separates what you do from who you are, reminding you when you’re not living according to your design, “That’s not who you are. That’s what you did, but that’s not who you are.”
Truth 3: You Are Never Alone
“I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!” (Psalm 139:7)
The Psalmist marvels at God’s constant presence:
- “If I go up to heaven, you are there”
- “If I go down to the grave, you are there”
- “If I ride the wings of the morning…even there your hand will guide me”
- “When I wake up, you are still with me” (v.18)
What’s truly awe-inspiring is that God not only wants to be with us—He wants to stay with us. The God who knows us best loves us most. The God who knows all our darkness has given us all His light.
How Does God Stay With Us Through Everything?
Even when we don’t want to be around ourselves, when others wouldn’t want to be around us, God still wants to be with us. He never leaves or forsakes us. He thinks, “They might need my help, and they probably will at any given moment. I need to stay with them.”
God created us with a spirit so that He could always dwell with us through the Holy Spirit. Before we were even created, God made a way to always be with us and never leave us.
What Does It Mean to Stand in Awe of God?
David says in Psalm 139:6, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand.” This is awe—the spiritual response to the overwhelming greatness of God.
When we truly grasp how deeply we matter to God—that we’re known, seen, heard, and never alone—we can only respond with awe. It’s too wonderful to fully comprehend, yet we’re invited to try to imagine it.
Life Application
This week, take time to soak in these three truths about how you matter to God:
- Embrace being fully known: Instead of hiding parts of yourself from God, rest in the knowledge that He already knows everything about you and loves you completely. How might your prayers change if you truly believed God already knows your thoughts before you speak them?
- Live as one who is seen and heard: When you feel invisible or unheard by others, remember that God sees and hears you. How would your day change if you lived with the awareness that God is watching over you with love?
- Walk in the confidence of God’s presence: Instead of facing challenges alone, recognize that God is with you, before you and behind you. What situation are you facing where you need to remember God’s promise: “I will be with you”?
Ask yourself: In what areas of my life do I struggle to believe I matter? How would my relationships, work, and daily activities change if I truly lived with the awareness that I matter deeply to God?
Remember, you matter not because of what you do, but because of who God created you to be. Let this truth transform how you see yourself and how you live each day.
